Frank Porter Graham Lecture presents: The Second Founding: How the Civil War and Reconstruction Remade the Constitution by Eric Foner

Professor Foner is on the country’s preeminent historians of slavery, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. He has authored more than twenty books, including the magisterial text, Reconstruction: America’s Unfinished Revolution 1863-1877 (1988), and most recently, The Second Founding: How the Civil War and Reconstruction Remade the Constitution. In 2011, he won the Pulitzer Prize for The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery.

The 2021 Frank Porter Graham Lecture is hosted in partnership with the UNC Center for Civil Rights’ online symposium titled “Equal Protection’s Grand Promise and Betrayals: Reconstruction, Plessy  to Bakke and Beyond: Is There a Way Forward?, February 18-19.
