Structures of Inequality: Systemic Racism & Health Disparities

August 27, 2020 @ 4:00 pm - 4:45 pm

Today, longstanding realities of systemic racism are being laid bare by the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing police violence. Injustice and inequality are broad, deep, and interconnected. Honors Carolina and the Phi Beta Kappa Society invite the campus community to come together for six topical discussions with faculty experts and six hours of action designed to marshal knowledge in the fight against racism. Join us for the first of the six-part series, Systemic Racism and Health Disparities presented by Geni Eng, Professor Gillings School of Global Public Health. Eugenia “Geni” Eng is Professor of Health Behavior at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, where she co-directs the Cancer Health Disparities Postdoctoral Program and the MPH degree concentration in Health Equity, Social Justice, and Human Rights. The focus of her teaching and research is on collaborating with historically marginalized communities in examining race-specific health outcomes with an anti-racism lens and enhancing health equity through system change interventions. Her studies have been funded by the National Institutes of Health, US Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and private foundations. She has fostered long-term collaborative research partnerships among academia, community-based organizations, and health agencies across North Carolina and nations of Africa and Southeast Asia.  She attributes her career commitment to the people of Togo in West Africa, where she was a Peace Corps Volunteer for four years, who guided and nurtured her to witness the potential power of public health.
