Three separate forms must be submitted prior to the endorsement deadline in order to complete your application. These include:
- Personal Information form
- Upload Application form
- Submit Recommenders form
We have separated the forms so that you may complete the steps at different times. These forms cannot be saved and must be completed in one sitting.
Personal Information Form
This form allows you to provide information about you, your education, and your future plans to ODS and the Marshall Selection Committee. You may complete this form prior to submitting your other application materials.
Your Mitchell personal statement cannot exceed 1,000 words. According to the Mitchell Scholarship Program, “The personal statement/essay is your opportunity to share your personality, interests, experiences, and goals with the selection committee. It should briefly convey why you want to be a Mitchell Scholar and how you will advance your personal objectives through study on the island of Ireland. It should not simply restate your list of activities, which is covered elsewhere in the application.” Click here to find specific advice for the Mitchell. Sample personal statements are available to view in the ODS office.
Note: You will be asked to sign a statement confirming that this essay is your own work and that neither it nor any earlier draft has been edited/reviewed by anyone other than you. Email ODS if you would like to talk generally about your application for the Mitchell, but we cannot provide feedback on your personal statement.
List of Awards & Activities
Provide a list of awards or activities, including short descriptions, in each of the following categories:
- Academic Achievements/Awards
- Leadership Activities
- Community Service
- Miscellaneous Awards and Activities
Although the Mitchell application only allows up to five entries in each category, you may include more in your endorsement application if you choose. Email ODS if you would like to receive feedback. Samples are available to view in the ODS office.
University and Course of Study Selections
Rank your top 3-5 choices for study if you are selected as a Mitchell Scholar. Include the degree, institution, and course of study. This information may be included in the same document as your personal statement.
Provide a copy of your current unofficial UNC transcript, including your latest semester’s grades. Click here for information on how to obtain your transcript online. If you have taken higher education courses that are not reflected on your transcript, provide those transcripts as well. If you are chosen for endorsement, you will be required to submit official transcripts to the Mitchell Scholarship.
Provide a high-resolution head shot photograph (.jpg or .jpeg file) for promotional purposes. It does not need to be professionally taken.

Letters of Recommendation
Request 3-4 letters of recommendation directly from faculty using the form linked below. We encourage you contact your recommenders at least one month prior to the endorsement deadline and to share your personal statement, resume, and future goals with all recommenders.
When choosing recommenders, consider the following:
- For full-time students, at least two of these recommendations must be from persons with whom the candidate has done academic work (It is preferable to choose a professor instead of a teaching assistant)
- For those who are not full-time students and have not been for the past year, at least one of the recommendations must be from someone with whom the candidate has done academic work
- Two recommendation letters may be character references. Choose someone who knows you well and can give specific comments on your character and potential for success outside of your scholarly work and interests.
When you complete the following form, your recommenders will receive an email with instructions to upload their letters as PDFs. You should ask potential recommenders personally before completing this form.
Recommendations should be signed, on letterhead, and addressed to The Mitchell Scholarship Selection Committee. Letters must not exceed 750 words. Please read this letter of guidance and share it with individuals you ask to write a letter of recommendation. Contact ODS if you need advice on choosing and contacting a recommender.
Recommenders who have questions should contact ODS directly.
After You Apply
Interviews with UNC Selection Committee
After reviewing the applications for endorsement, the UNC Mitchell Scholarship Selection Committee will invite competitive applicants to participate in an on-campus interview. Applicants who are unavailable for on-campus interviews should contact ODS prior to the endorsement application deadline to discuss other interview options. Endorsed candidates will be notified soon after the interviews.
Next Steps for Endorsed Candidates
Endorsed candidates will be able to work with ODS to polish their applications prior to the Mitchell Scholarship deadline. All application materials must be submitted online to the Mitchell Scholarship before the final deadline. The applicant is responsible for submitting all materials online except the letters of recommendation, which must be submitted by the recommenders. Those who encounter difficulties should contact ODS. Endorsed applicants should provide a copy of their final application materials to ODS.
Within 48 hours after the Mitchell deadline, all applicants must submit an online video interview. The video interview is another way for the Marshall Selection Committee to get to know candidates better. The interview will take less than 10 minutes, and you will have the opportunity to do practice beforehand.
Semi-finalists for the Mitchell Scholarship are invited in October to interview via Skype. These interviews are held the final week of October. Finalists are notified in early/mid November and invited to attend a reception and interview in Washington, D.C the weekend before Thanksgiving. ODS will organize practice interviews prior to the finalist interviews. Finalists will be notified shortly after their interviews if they have been selected as a Mitchell Scholar.
