The Class of 1938 Fellowship supports undergraduate students who want to pursue innovative, self-directed learning experiences that promote peace, global citizenship, and mutual understanding beyond UNC's campus. Fellows design projects that foster meaningful cross-cultural engagement through research, service, creative work, or other immersive experiences. Designed for curious, globally minded students, the fellowship provides funding to support transformative experiences that deepen intercultural understanding while preparing students to address complex global challenges.

Established in 1975 by members of the UNC Class of 1938, the fellowship honors a generation whose experiences during World War II inspired a lifelong commitment to international understanding and peace. In 1992, Dr. Charles and Margaret Witten expanded this legacy by establishing the Witten Award, creating additional opportunities for Carolina students to pursue experiences that build bridges across cultures.
