Conquest and Colonization in the English Atlantic World

This Burch Field Research Seminar is a four-week program that studies the nature of conquest in the expansion of England, beginning with the Norman Conquest itself, but focusing on English colonization in Ireland and the New World. The Seminar includes numerous trips to sites in England and Ireland to examine the role of fortification, maritime technology, and the building of colonial settlements in the creation of a “conquest society.” Along the way, students will also receive in-depth instruction in the tools of conducting research in early modern archival materials.
