Position Description

The Graduate Assistant (GA) is a pivotal role in the Office of Distinguished Scholarships (ODS) in Honors Carolina, directly influencing the success of competitive fellowship applicants. This position supports all aspects of ODS with an emphasis on working directly with Carolina students and alumni through fellowship and scholarship advising. The position provides advising for multiple opportunities but will especially support applicants for the Fulbright US Student Program. The GA also helps manages administrative processes, collaborates with UNC staff and faculty, and represents ODS across campus.

No background in fellowship advising is required. However, applicants must be dedicated to working directly with Carolina students. Competitive GA applicants will be enthusiastic about working with students on application writing and helping students more effectively communicate about their backgrounds, experiences, interests, and future goals. As many of these opportunities are international, being globally oriented is beneficial.

The ODS GA position could be especially attractive to graduate students considering non-faculty careers in higher education (sometimes called alt-ac careers). There is a robust world of higher education professionals providing support for nationally-competitive fellowships. Almost every university has at least one staff member in this type of role. And the best way to be competitive for these positions is by having experience in fellowship advising. The ODS GA will also develop transferable skills and experiences for graduate students that are aspiring faculty as well as those interested in careers in academic advising, writing centers, learning centers, and other academic support offices.

ODS is a small and dynamic office, so the GA will be given extensive responsibilities for advising and program administration.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one fellowship advising to Carolina students and alumni
    • Fellowship advising will be centered on the Fulbright US Student Program but will also include other scholarships and fellowships
  • Offer feedback, both written and verbal, on scholarship application materials
  • Provide support and preparation for scholarship interviews
  • Organize, manage, and facilitate applicant meetings with the UNC Fulbright Committee via Zoom
  • Maintain administrative records, including notes on applicant meetings
  • Develop ODS materials and programs, including workshops
  • Deliver ODS workshops and information sessions
  • Help maintain and improve ODS administrative processes
  • Other duties in support of the ODS mission
