Scholarships

JASNA conducts an annual student Essay Contest to foster the study and appreciation of Jane Austen’s work.

The Fund provides financial support to offer highly qualified scientists the opportunity to pursue research into the causes, origins and treatment of cancer. Research may be carried out at the institution of the applicant’s choosing. The fellowship is for three years and there is child care funding for female fellows.

The Foundation provides support to scholars in the field of Japanese Studies by offering the opportunity to conduct research in Japan through the following fellowship programs:

Scholars and Researchers – Long-term (2-12 months)
Scholars and researchers in the humanities or social sciences who hold a Ph.D. or equivalent professional experience at the time of application.

Scholars and Researchers – Short-term (21-59 days)
Scholars and researchers in the humanities and social sciences who need to conduct intensive short-term research in Japan and who hold a Ph.D. or equivalent professional experience at the time of application.

Doctoral Candidates (4-12 months)
Doctoral candidates in the humanities or social sciences who have achieved ABD status by the time the fellowship begins.

Fellowships provide opportunities for young and excellent postdoctoral researchers from other countries to conduct, under the guidance of their hosts, cooperative research with leading research groups in universities and other Japanese institutions. Applicants must identify a host at an eligible institution (see application guidelines). The fellowships are for 12-24 months.

JISP supports Japanese nationals obtaining PhD degrees in macroeconomics, preparing them to work as economists at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The scholarship is funded by the government of Japan and administered by the IMF Institute with assistance from the Institute of International Education (IIE). All award recipients are required to apply to the IMF’s Economist Program (EP) upon completion of their doctoral studies and to accept an EP position if offered. Scholars who do not comply with this condition will be asked to repay the scholarship cost. The program is for two years.

Scholarships support National JACL members pursuing graduate study across all disciplines, including law, business, and medicine. The scholarship is for one year.

Abe and Esther Hagiwara Student Aid Award for students with severe financial need.
Aiko Susanna Tashiro Hiratsuka Memorial Scholarship for students studying in the performing arts.
Henry and Chiyo Kuwahara Creative Arts Award for creative projects that reflect the Japanese American experience.
Dr. George Goro and Nettie Muramoto Memorial Scholarship for students who demonstrate financial need.

The Japanese Association of University Women offers fellowships for women to conduct independent research or advanced study in Japan. The fellowship offers support for 5-6 months.

Candidates for a Jeanne Marandon Scholarship must be of American nationality, or resident alien in the United States, belong to an American university and have sufficient oral and written knowledge of the French language to enable them to pursue studies or research in France or Quebec.

USIP’s Jennings Randolph Program for International Peace awards non-residential Peace Scholar Dissertation Fellowships to students enrolled in U.S. universities and who are writing doctoral dissertations on topics related to international conflict management and peace building
