Scholarships

The Fellowship is for research on the Civil War, its origins, and consequences. The research is to be carried out jointly at the Boston Athenaeum and the collections of the Massachusetts Historical Society. The fellowship is for at least four weeks of research at each institution.

Fellowships support scholars investigating a wide range of topics who wish to use the collections housed at the Massachusetts Historical Society in Boston. Applicants should consult the website for a listing of fellowships being awarded for a particular funding cycle. Fellowships offer support for four weeks.

Fellowships support doctoral students who plan a career in higher education and have completed all other PhD requirements to finish their dissertations. Fellows may be pursuing the PhD degree in any discipline or area taught in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. Current fields of study can be viewed on the MIT-SHASS website. Each Fellow will be affiliated with a department or program in the School and have access to with access to the libraries and faculty of the School. Fellows will not be required to teach while at MIT, but are required to be in residence during the term of the fellowship. The fellowship is for nine months.

Internships offer graduate students hands-on experience in a leading-edge research environment that applies advanced technology to problems critical to national security. Program participants will contribute to projects and gain experience that complements their courses of study. Opportunities exist in fields such as communications systems, sensor and radar data analysis, digital signal processing, laser and electro-optical systems, solid-state electronics, software engineering, and scientific programming. Projects may be available for students with backgrounds in electrical engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics, mechanical engineering, aeronautics/astronautics, materials science, molecular biology, biochemistry, and related fields. The program runs from early June through mid-August.

Summer fellowships support independent, self-directed research projects, which will intersect with one or more of Mathematica’s focus areas: data analytics, disability, early childhood, education, family support, health, international, labor, or nutrition. Fellows will be mentored by senior staff, learn about Mathematica and its work, and have the opportunity to shadow Mathematica research projects and proposals. Fellows are required to work at one of Mathematica’s six office locations at least three days per week during the fellowship period. The fellowship is for 12 weeks.

2 students of Asisan heritage (at least 50%) awarded $5,000 annually. Must be majoring in: Accounting, political science, public policy, business administration or related fields and attending a California state university.

Provides funding for graduate students studying archaeology or ethnoarchaeology of the American Southwest and the South American Andes. The amount awarded is variable with one or more scholarships available each year. In 2021, the scholarship award has been set at $5,000.

One to three month scholarships for advanced PhD students seeking a close working relationship with a researcher from the institute.

Scholarships for graduate students at the beginning of the dissertation process to design a dissertation project at the institute in the context of existing research fields. Designed to integrate highly qualified scholars into an international research environment early in their careers.
