Ana Dougherty, 22, came to UNC from Montezuma, New Mexico. She will graduate with highest distinction in May as a double major in Global Studies (concentrations in Latin America, international politics, and social movements) and economics, and a minor in PPE (philosophy, politics & economics). She is a Morehead-Cain Scholar, Phi Beta Kappa member, Honors Carolina student and a Buckley Public Service Scholar. Ana’s path has been shaped by her experiences learning about entrepreneurial leadership education in South Africa, impact-investing in the South Caucasus, housing issues in Argentina, and public defense in Washington, D.C. Ana dreams of working in international criminal law and human rights, working to find better ways to ensure justice and communal integrity for the collective, while recognizing the dignity and the complexities if the individual.
During her time at UNC, Ana has served as the Co-Chair for Criminal Justice Awareness and Action, helping to lead its programs at the juvenile detention center in Durham, and working with local activities and organizations to promote criminal justice reform. Throughout her four years, she has also served as a Financial Coaching Fellow at the Community Empowerment Fund and sung in UNC’s Chamber Singers. As part of her semester in Buenos Aires, Ana conducted research on the construction of Latin American identity and the 2015 Argentinian presidential elections.
As a 2017-18 Princeton in Latin America Fellow, Ana will be in Managua, Nicaragua, working as an Impact and Research Programs Associate at Global Partnerships, a non-profit impact-led investor. Ana is thrilled to be joining Global Partnerships in its mission to expand health, energy, and economic opportunity for people living in poverty.
Princeton in Latin America (PiLA) partners with NGOs and multilateral organizations and places highly qualified recent college graduates in yearlong service fellowships with nonprofit, public service, humanitarian, and government organizations with a social mission in Latin American and Caribbean. Placements emphasize the power of firsthand work experience to shape young people’s attitudes and mobilize them to effect positive social change. PiLA enhances the mission of its partners by building their capacity to impact constructively the communities they serve, addressing the social, economic, and political barriers to egalitarian community development. Since 2003, PiLA has placed 320 fellows with partners in 20 countries throughout the region.
