Applications to become a student-instructor are submitted in the Spring semester in the year before the C-START student-instructor will teach. Students are chosen that same semester. For example, a student-instructor interested in teaching in 2021-2022 should apply in Spring 2021 and will be notified before the end of the semester.
Students interested in teaching a C-START course must have a 3.0 GPA, completed four semesters at UNC, earned 75 credit hours (including placement credits) by the end of the Spring 2021 semester, and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.000 or higher. (Junior transfer students are exempt from the four semester requirement.)

The application period for students interested in teaching a C-START course during the 2021-2022 academic year will open on February 17.
Students are required to submit the following materials:
- Description of the proposed course
- Student’s qualifications to teach that course
- Letter of support from a faculty mentor (sent separately by the faculty)
All application materials, including the faculty letter of support, are due to Honors Carolina by Friday, April 16, 2021 at 12:00 noon EST.
Students who are accepted into C-START will work under the supervision of a faculty mentor during the Fall 2021 semester to prepare their course, submitting a final course syllabus at the end of the term which must be approved by the C-START oversight committee.
